Lucy's Legacy

I'm so excited! I just read a great article in the new National Geographic Adventure magazine about the Lucy's Legacy exhibit now at the Pacific Science Center here that contains the oldest human skeleton ever found and has turned quite a few theories upside down! It was found in the 70's but the Ethiopian government had it locked away in a special vault until in 2007 when the Houston Museum made a special deal with them and now it's on a short tour of the states! So if you get a chance you should definitely try and get in to see it. There is a special coupon for buy one ticket get one free deal now so take advantage of it!

Derinkuyu: A Mysterious Underground World

Buried deep in the Cappadocia region of Turkey, an underground labyrinth-like city called Derinkuyu exists.

 "No one knows how many underground cities lie beneath Cappadocia. Eight have been discovered, and many smaller villages, but there are doubtless more. The biggest, Derinkuyu, wasn’t discovered until 1965, when a resident cleaning the back wall of his cave house broke through a wall and discovered behind it a room that he’d never seen, which led to still another, and another. Eventually, spelunking archeologists found a maze of connecting chambers that descended at least 18 stories and 280 feet beneath the surface, ample enough to hold 30,000 people – and much remains to be excavated. One tunnel, wide enough for three people walking abreast, connects to another underground town six miles away. Other passages suggest that at one time all of Cappadocia, above and below the ground, was linked by a hidden network."

Can you imagine walking around in this place? Or living there? I'm guessing it would be a mixture of claustrophobia and awe but I would love to visit it for myself. Cappadocia is also know for its "fairy chimneys" so I have TWO reasons to visit. Anyone care to join me?

Ancient Ruins of the Cloud People of Peru

First I'd like to say sorry my absence of late. It's the last week of fall quarter and I haven't felt right about procrastinating on Blogger. Although, I do have a lot of things to share since I've been bookmarking all the wonderful wonders I've found over the past few weeks. 

So let's begin with some exciting news......Archeologists have recently discovered the ruins of the legendary Cloud People of Peru hidden deep in the Amazon rainforest! I love hearing that there are still mysteries on this earth waiting to be discovered. I can't even imagine stepping out of a dense rainforest into a clearing and seeing this ancient city looming ahead of you. So magical in all its secretive, mysterious glory.
