Book Review: The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop

Wow...I haven't gone through a book this fast in a long long while. Lewis Buzbee's book The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop:  a memoir, a history was made for me. 

I really believe that fate brought this book to me. I needed a new book although I already had about 4 good books waiting on my shelf to be read, I was in the mood for something different, nothing in  particular, just different. So I made a special trip to my local bookshop and wandered the tiny room for something to catch my eye. I only really was judging by the covers, but after about 10 minutes I saw a cover that said "bookshop" and that was all I needed. 

Buzbee details all the best things of being in the presence of a bookshop. Every little bit of reverie I've ever felt upon entering a bookstore was summed up perfectly, something I never thought could have been put into words. The book also tells the history of booksellers from ancient Egypt to modern day. It's a really great prep for anyone who wants to work in or own their own shop...which I do someday. 

Anyways...this is going to get too long if I keep going. It's just so hard to stop talking about a book that fits so perfectly with yourself. If you love books, just read it, trust me.

Kite Fighting In Kabul

If you've read or seen Kite Runner than this will be of particular interest to you it's such a beautiful tradition. I think I would be a terrible kite fighter...

Merry Christmas Eve!

Hope everyone is enjoying their Christmasy Christmas Eve! 

I turned 22 on the 22nd (my golden birthday) and got a new camera! I'm excited to start taking some pictures of my world to show you all soon. So stay tuned...

New Amy Sol for Gelaskins

Yes!!!...Finally!!!...about a year ago I sent an e-mail to Gelaskins asking them if they could offer more skins by both Audrey Kawasaki and Amy Sol. I have the Audrey Kawasaki Odaijini iPod skin and I didn't want the Mario-like Amy Sol one because well...I'm just not a big fan of Mario....

But finally they've added a new Amy Sol skin called "Leave The Hair And Go Free"

Art of Dreams: Daniel Merriam

As a Christmas present I bought this Art of Dreams calendar for a friend of mine. I hadn't ever heard of the artist before but the it caught my eye in a bookstore last week and I was just fell in love with the fantastic surrealist artwork on the cover I had to buy it! 

For those of you who know me, know that I love magical dreamworlds, fairies and all things make believe. I think it comes with being an only child, having only my imagination and my cat for company. 

So here is just a little sampling of the wonderful Daniel Merriam. I hope you enjoy his work!

Cooper Kitty Camera!

Best idea ever! Cooper the Cat of the Greenwood neighborhood in Seattle has been rigged with a camouflaged kitty camera that automatically take a picture every two minutes! 

Through his Flickr account you can view life through Cooper's eyes. Cooper spends his time watching his owners, looking at the sky, and checking out home security signs. 

It's a beautiful thing. 

He's even appearing on Animal Planet tonight!

Hoaken/Helga Repurposed Accessories

If I had the money...this would be my new favorite bag....I'm kind of a red flannel-o-holic so it's pretty much ideal. 

I do have to choose my flannel wisely however. I don't exactly want to be covered in it after all. 

Hoaken /Helga offers beautiful handmade accessories as well. Especially this feather necklace, it's a great statement piece and very fantastical.

Robin Barcus "Green" Dresses

Who new that corn husks and sticks would make such beautiful dresses?! Robin Barcus created a series of dresses out of all natural objects and then displayed them on models in the material's natural environment. The result is stunning...the woman in the water bringing up a real life image of the Lady of Shallot.

Penguin Book Classics

I'm sure you're all familiar with Penguin Books especially their classics. And maybe, if you've wandered into Urban Outfitters as of late, you've seen that there's quite a large selection of Penguin classics with surprising cover makeovers. Judging by the covers Crime and Punishment or Pride & Prejudice seem like quirky, modern reads. I've even been tempted to by a few that I already own just for the cover art. 

Well...this week I stumbled upon the UK Penguin Blog, which is so super cute and read an interview about one of the artists designing a new set of hardcover classics. To my disappointment they aren't yet offered in the US but hopefully that will change soon. My recommendations? The Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde and Wuthering Heights by Emile Bronte.
